A new EC regulation on hydrogen-fueled motor vehicles, (EC) No. 79/2009, was published Feb. 4. According toInterRegs, an online resource for global vehicle safety and emissions regulations, the new rule applies to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses that use hydrogen as a fuel, either in internal-combustion engines or fuel cells. It covers the safety aspects of both compressed (gaseous) and liquefied hydrogen fuel systems, with requirements on components (e.g., storage tanks, valves, fuel lines) and on the vehicle installation. Compliance becomes mandatory from Feb. 24, 2011, for new types of vehicles, and from Feb. 24, 2012, for all new vehicles.
