This course is one in a four-course series that leads to a Professional
Certificate in Automotive Product Development Management, jointly
conferred by SAE and Oakland University’s renowned School of
Business.
This course stresses that there are no single “silver bullets” for effective
product development. Companies need to do many things in a broad
number of areas consistently well, for effective product development
to occur. Consistency of many details, ranging from structure to
culture to process, is an important determinant. Further, organizational
structures that facilitate building core competencies and accumulating
relevant knowledge and information are required.
This course describes a holistic system for managing integrated
product development including important sub-processes and the
organizational dynamics that are required for success. The timing
discipline is stressed as the driving force behind successful execution
because it creates accountability for progress and results. Important
management issues are also addressed, along with techniques for
effectively creating products that are competitive regarding quality,
cost, and speed to market. Finally, cross-functional integration issues
are covered.
