William Mark McVea is president and principal engineer of KBE+, Inc. He holds a PhD in Design Engineering from Purdue University's Automotive Sciences Department.

--------------------

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the basic chemistry, operational characteristics, functional benefits and applicability of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) technology

• Appreciate the potential improvements in emission and fuel consumption reduction due to the implementation of HCCI technology

• Realize that full HCCI operation may not be the optimal solution, rather a combined operational scheme with Stratified Charge engine operation may provide the optimum engine performance
